Samurai’s Garden Extra Credit Options

Due by December 12th.  You can only complete one of the assignments for points.

Option 1: Visit the Japanese Tea Garden in San Francisco.  (Located in Golden Gate Park. Open daily from 9-6.  Admission is 5 to 7 dollars.)  Take pictures while you are there.  After visiting, write a one-page reflection on your experience.  Share your experience and pictures with the class.  25 points extra credit.

Option 2: Visit Green Gulch Zen Center and participate in a Buddhist meditation and talk.  Sunday programs are open to the public on most weekends (check their website to verify the weekend you want to go).  Arrive at 8:15 for meditation instruction.  Stay for the meditation and Dharma Talk (9:15-11:15).  Afterwards, you can choose to stay for tea and the discussion with the lecturer if you want.  Remember to be EXTREMELY RESPECTFUL as you participate in their religious service.  Afterwards, write a one-page reflection about your experience.  In class you will share your experience with the class. 50 points extra credit.

Option 3: Interview someone who lived through WWII.  First, write out at least 10 questions you would like to ask someone about WWII.  Next, find someone who was old enough to remember WWII. This could be a relative, neighbor or you could visit a retirement home.  Interview that person about their experience and take notes about what they say.  After the interview, type up the interview questions and a summary of their answers. Finally, write a reflection about what you learned from this person.  In class you will share your experience with the class. 25 points extra credit.

“Lamb of the Slaughter” Take Home Essay



You are going to type and revise your essay on “Lamb of the Slaughter.”  Your essay should be carefully edited for errors.  It should be in Times New Roman, twelve point font and double spaced.
Your essay is due in class Monday, September 22nd. If you want to see the short story again, you can search online for the title and you will find the full text.


Option 1: Dark comedy is defined as having grim or sarcastic humor; a comedy having gloomy or disturbing elements.  Explain three elements which make this story a dark comedy. Write at least 2.5 pages.

Option 2: Trace Mary Maloney’s emotional state through the story.  Write at least 2.5 pages.

For this essay I will be grading you on:
*Quotations: Did you use a signal phrase and cite it correctly?
*Analysis Paragraph Parts: Did you include all six parts of the analysis paragraph in your body paragraph?
*Full and thoughtful introduction and conclusion

WWI in Pictures

Part 1:
  1. Take time to look at all of the pictures in the album.  Think about the feeling you have while looking at the photos as well as look for details that tell you about the experience of living through WWI.
  2. Pick one of the photos from the album. Write a paragraph describing what the picture is of and your reaction to it.  You can write about emotions you feel, thoughts or questions you have and why you picked this photograph.
Part 2:
5. Click on the introduction link and read through the photo captions.  Take your time to read them all and look at the pictures thoughtfully.
6. Pick three photos and share your thoughts.  In a paragraph, describe the photos and your feelings and questions about them. Include information that you learned about through the pictures and captions.
7. If you have time, you can look at the other photo collections on The Atlantic website for WWI.

Find one flashback in these chapters and include a quotation from it. Explain what happened in the flashback. What is the reason the author would use flashbacks in this story?
